Great Books of the Western World

Franklin Library Great Books of the Western World

The Franklin Library leather bound collection: Great Books of the Western World consists of 96 leather bound volumes published to Franklin Library members from 1978 to 1985. All books in the Great Books of the Western World collection are bound in genuine leather with silk moire end papers, 22k gold accents, gilt page edges, and sewn-in bookmarks.

The Franklin Library Great Books of the Western World series was published by Franklin Library under agreement with Encyclopaedia Britannica. Great Books of the Western World was originally published by the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and the Franklin Library edition marked the 25th anniversary of the original publication. This leather bound book series covers monumental works that influenced the world, from Darwin’s The Origins of the Species to Homer’s The Iliad to The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

Great Books of the Western World focuses on the importance and impact of the books, and are the kind of books that are read (or displayed) for their historical significance more than for the enjoyment of reading.

Since the Franklin Library closed in 2000, all titles in the Great Books of the Western World series are out of print and only available from secondary aftermarket sources, primarily collectible booksellers and direct sales such as ebay.
